CO₂ Cartridges for air guns

CO₂ cartridges are gas cartridges used as an energy source for air guns such as CO₂ pistols, rifles, airsoft replicas and certain paintball systems. The cartridges contain compressed carbon dioxide that, when punctured through the valve, expands and powers the projectile. Common formats include 12-gram CO₂ cartridges for pistols and compact weapons, and 88-gram CO₂ cartridges for longer shooting sessions with higher shot capacity. These cartridges are popular because they can be used immediately without a compressed air cylinder, hand pump or compressor.

Compared to PCP systems, CO₂ weapons usually deliver lower muzzle velocity and are more sensitive to temperature differences (higher pressure when hot, lower pressure when cold). The advantage is that CO₂ cartridges are easy to assemble, require little maintenance and are consistent enough for recreational shooting, plinking, short-range training and light hunting applications where permitted. 12 g cartridges are typically single use and are discarded after shooting empty; 88 g cartridges can last longer but often require an adapter and are primarily used on carbine rifles with prolonged shooting without reloading. CO₂ capsules are usually made of steel with a galvanized protective coating against corrosion and are filled airtight to prevent pressure loss. Quality differences are mainly in the seal, pressure consistency and presence of lubricant (some cartridges contain silicone oil to maintain gaskets; others are "dry" and suitable for precision weapons without residue).
